Triantán Theatre Company's One-Act Event in Cork City

Post by Triantán Theatre on Thu Jun 11, 2009 9:58 am

Triantán Theatre Company presents an evening of award-winning one-act plays from 17-20 June at 8pm at the Unitarian Church, Princes Street, Cork City together with an exhibition of poetry and art.
Triantán is a Cork-based collective of actors, directors, playwrights and musicians who believe in a collaborative approach to theatre and performance. Triantán was set up in February 2009 by Kate O Sullivan and Lindsey Crean, two Cork-based actors/writers/directors who want to promote a collaborative approach to devising, developing and performing new writing. Triantán, meaning triangle in Irish, signifies the co-operative approach between writer, director and actor that we believe is necessary for the creative process involved in staging new work. The idea to form this theatre company came out of an actors' collective that meets up regularly in Cork to perform and direct one another.
Triantán have chosen three scripts, Trollied, Basin of Myself and Circus, from submissions around Ireland, two of which received the Jerome Hynes Memorial Award in the Múscailt Festivals 2006 and 2009 in Galway. Trollied is a dark comedy about two teenage girls who go bush drinking in a deserted car-park to celebrate one of their birthdays. A stranger interrupts their fun and forces them to make a horrific life-changing choice. Basin of Myself is an extract from a full-length play called AfterCircles, which will be premiered in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year. It is about three women who are trapped in a hotel room and are afraid to leave for fear of losing their lives. A war wages outside and they have no communication with the outside world but there is hope in the form of paper and ink. Circus explores the transience of life and the power of people’s dreams and ambitions through its three characters Guy, Girl and Clown.
Triantán are collaborating with local artists and poets to create works inspired by the plays and will be holding a free exhibition of these poems and artistic pieces from 7-8pm each night before the theatrical performance.
